The Hospitality of Surrender; Invitations for practice & life

tempImagesxn0kc.gif

The Hospitality of Surrender; Invitations for practice and life is a book which takes the Self-help format meeting artistic practice.
In the book I share with the reader my approach to surrender through my two dance practices Form and Streaming, my performance FORMLESS and by reflecting upon my yoga practice as part of that process.

This book is an accumulation of an artistic research process undertaken as part of my Masters Degree at The Home of Performance Practices at ArtEZ University of the Arts. It sits alongside a live performance and a written thesis. Although this research was situated in dance and artistic research, surrender extends beyond this and for me, is a life practice. Surrender is about commitment, openness, acceptance. Surrender is a way of being in the world, which involves negotiation, listening and attuning.

I write from a position of my practice, both as a dancer and a yoga practitioner – but that does not limit who can read this book. The book will take you through my practice and some of the performances I have made during this research process, which I hope will share surrender in its many forms.

The book is about expansion. It expands how surrender is understood and thought about, which consequently leads to another expansion once it is set into action. It is a quiet questioning of power, hierarchies and control. I hope that it will offer a space for reflection, activation and strength for negotiating this precarious world that we live in.

In the book I write through my personal experience of working with and contemplating surrender during this artistic research process. I share with the reader various invitations that they can apply to their everyday life. The book contains images from the video archive of my practice, handwritten notes from the practice, illustrations by artist Lawin Ramelinck, a conversation with Ella Tighe and musician Nikkie Kemp, QR codes to the practices/performance and invitations for the reader to engage with surrender for themselves. The book comes with an authors note and a performance insert which contains photographs from the performance FORMLESS.
